Avebury

Today I woke up bright & early, i.e. 7:30am, to go to Avebury & Stonehenge. Angela, one of the secretaries in the American Studies department, throws together a one-day trip & an overnight trip for the American students so they can see the area more. So our trip today, for 30 quid ($60) was to Avebury & Stonehenge.

Now Avebury is about a 2-hour drive east of Wales in England. It is famous for its rocks, but not as famous as Stonehenge. The druids still use this site for worship, & Paul, our guide, thinks they used it last night because it was a full moon. Don't ask me what druids do - but think of Merlin from the King Arthur tells - he's a druid. Anyway, so here are some photos of Avebury.

This is the church at Avebury, which is an actual village, so the church is fully functioning. The photos inside didn't turn out well - they're kinda fuzzy. :-(

This is part of the outer circle that has been reconstructed. Yes, it looks like it's just a bunch of rocks. :-)

Me, obviously, next to the rock that supposedly signifies female fertility. Supposedly there used to be a 25ft obelisk rock opposite this one & when then sun shone at noon, the shadow from the obelisk cut through this round stone. Therefore, creating a phallic symbol cutting through the female circle (Tay Fizdale would love the phallic reference I do believe. :-))
